In 1907 Walter Hardenburg, a young American explorer and engineer, was canoeing slowly down a meandering tributary of the great river, in deepest ia, in search of adventure. The realm of Captain Kurtz's Apocalypse Now seems tame by comparison with what he found through the mist up ahead. Hardenburg had entered the rubber domain of Julio César Arana, a rubber fiefdom gone mad - where the only law that counted was the 'Winchester constitution' the rifle made all the rules.
The native people were routinely enslaved to work the rubber plantations and flogged, raped and tortured to death if they resisted. Something snapped inside the young, idealistic Hardenburg when he witnessed these scenes of horror thousands of native people were being slaughtered to satisfy the West's insatiable demand for rubber. The rubber extraction methods that produced car tires, rubber hoses and countless other products relied on an entrenched system of utter barbarism.
Hardenburg vowed to seek justice for the thousands of victims of the Putumayo atrocities and to publicize the destruction of their lives and culture across the world. This is the story of how he did it. Blood Rubber is about the power of one versus the power of the machine...of utter evil versus improbable goodness.
Adam Courtenay is an Australian adventurer and writer who canoed up the as part of his research for this book. He has trekked some of the world's most enthralling and difficult trails retraced Hannibal's footsteps over the Alps; slogged over the Kokoda Trail in New Guinea; and walked the Aboriginal Larapinta 'Dreamtime' in the central Australian desert.
As a journalist he has worked for the Financial Times and as a Sydney-based correspondent for the UK's Sunday Times. He currently writes for The Sydney Morning Herald/Age and is the Australia correspondent for the online finance platform TradingFloor.com.
His interest in ian history goes back five years - he has explored the twice and written one ebook, Grand Mistresses of the . He is currently writing a larger nonfiction work on the entire history of the basin, which he plans to publish soon as Men.

I've just finished Adam Courtenay's short but fascinating book Blood Rubber. It has opened up a whole additional world of' man's cruelty to man for me. I had no idea of this genocide perpetrated in the name of the god 'profit'. It's another blot on the copy book of the English quest for money to be squeezed from unsuspectingly simple natives who were sitting on the rubber which could be used to for the benefit of the 'new world'. But at such a price! Courtenay's description were authentic and graphic and I look forward to reading more from this promising author.Product details

Courtenay’s page-turner presents harrowing historical accounts of torture and inhumane treatment of the indigenous people of South America at the hands of a powerful and greedy Peruvian businessman (and, indirectly, the British shareholders of his company who conveniently have their heads in the sand). What struck me was the parallel between this story set 100 years ago and the actions of multinational corporations today. Tragically, not much has changed. Courtenay also tells us about an unsung American hero who reveals the abuses of the rubber baron and his cohort, reminding me - again - of today’s whistle blowers and human rights activists who alert the world to atrocities committed in far-away countries. Courtenay has done us a great service by bringing to life stories of injustice and those who seek to expose them that would have otherwise been forgotten.

Beautifully written account of a dark secret in ian history. It's such a vivid account of one man's fight for justice, I can see this being made into a film or TV documentary. Well worth reading.
Courtenay brings to life the main players in this brief but vitally important (and neglected) chapter of South American history. It is a quiet gem, and I would encourage anyone with a passing interest in the stories of the to take the time to read these three elegantly composed chapters. Informative, bewildering, and cogent.
